This lovely Lumsdale Falls walk is one of our absolute favourites and it packs an awful lot of interest into a short distance! It explores the stunning Lumsdale Valley, just outside Matlock. An area with a fascinating industrial past, it’s now a peaceful, wooded valley with romantically overgrown mill ruins standing beside waterfalls.
The picturesque village of Ashover, the centre of which is designated as a Conservation Area, lies in the beautiful Amber Valley surrounded by tree clad hills. All around is excellent walking country, which is gradually attracting a growing number of visitors, as the area becomes better known.

Black Rocks is a weathered outcrop of Ashover grit which can be reached by a short, but steep climb, from the car park. The climb up onto the gritstone outcrop of Black Rocks is rewarded with superb views. Waymarked walks guide you through the Forestry Commission woodlands of Cromford Moor. You can access beautiful and varied countryside, including the High Peak Trail. A short walk or ride along the trail to Sheep Pasture Top provides an excellent view of the Matlock Gorge, Cromford and the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. To the west is the National Stone Centre and Middleton Top Countryside Centre and Cycle Hire. The Black Rocks site was mined for lead, the spoil on the scree slope leading up to Black Rocks supports many interesting lead tolerant plants (leadworts). The scree slope is an ideal place to search for a variety of rocks and minerals. Other interesting habitats can be explored from Black Rocks, since it is near the boundary between limestone and gritstone. Cromford Moor has heather moorland and various types of woodland.
The traditional image of the Peak District — rolling hills and country pubs, curious sheep and dry stone walls — turns out to be a gross oversimplification. A weekend clambering over stiles and sipping pints of bitter is both feasible and enjoyable, but linger a while longer in this swathe of central England, and a whole new side reveals itself.
Othe south-eastern edge of the Peak District National Park lies the tourist hub of Matlock and Matlock Bath. These two towns are only a mile apart from each other, connected by the River Derwent and the A6, and are a popular base for families visiting the Peak District as there are so many things to do in Matlock and Matlock Bath with kids.
